Nicole is a highly experienced Clinical Psychologist, Schema Therapist and clinical supervisor with 30 years of experience across acute mental health, child and adolescent mental health, correctional, community-based, university and private practice settings.

She specialises in Schema Therapy for adults experiencing complex or longstanding psychological difficulties and has been practising Schema Therapy since 2014.

Nicole is particularly interested in helping people understand the deeper patterns that can develop throughout life, how these patterns came to be, why they continue to influence the way we think, feel and relate to ourselves and others, and how therapy can help create meaningful change.

Her approach recognises that psychological distress doesn't develop in isolation. Our relationships, early experiences, identity, culture, gender, sexuality, social environments and experiences of power and marginalisation can all contribute to how we understand ourselves and the world around us.

Nicole may be a good fit for you if...
You're looking for a highly experienced Clinical Psychologist who is interested in understanding what's underneath the difficulties you're experiencing, particularly when the same feelings, relationship difficulties or patterns seem to keep returning.

You may have already spent considerable time understanding what you do but still find yourself wondering why the same patterns keep happening.

Perhaps you repeatedly put other people's needs ahead of your own, find it difficult to trust or feel safe in relationships, hold yourself to impossibly high standards, feel that you're somehow not good enough, or notice yourself responding strongly to situations even when part of you knows the reaction doesn't quite fit what's happening now.

You may have experienced difficult or traumatic relationships, longstanding emotional difficulties or patterns that haven't shifted through previous therapy, or you may simply want to develop a deeper understanding of yourself and the experiences that have shaped you.

Nicole may also be a particularly good fit if questions of gender, sexuality, identity, relationships, social expectations or experiences of marginalisation are important to understanding what has brought you to therapy.

These are some of Nicole's areas of interest rather than an exhaustive list.

Nicole's Approach
Nicole describes herself as a cis-gendered Clinical Psychologist, feminist and clinical supervisor. These perspectives form an important part of how she understands psychological practice and the experiences people bring to therapy.

Nicole believes that understanding psychological distress requires us to look beyond symptoms alone. Her work is grounded in Schema Therapy while also recognising the broader relational and social contexts in which people's experiences develop.

She is currently developing a feminist and socially responsive approach to Schema Therapy, which centres power, rights and systemic context in understanding psychological distress.

Her work explores how feminist, queer and decolonial perspectives can expand Schema Therapy beyond viewing difficulties solely within the individual and towards a broader understanding of the relational, social and systemic experiences that can contribute to suffering and healing.

Nicole is currently researching the integration of queer, decolonial and feminist theory into clinical practice, with particular attention to the intersections of gender, sexuality, health and systemic marginalisation.

Schema Therapy at Willow Tree

As Lead Schema Therapist at Willow Tree Psychology & Wellbeing, Nicole is helping develop and grow Schema Therapy across the practice.

Alongside providing individual Schema Therapy, Nicole works with the Willow Tree team to strengthen Schema Therapy knowledge and clinical practice through supervision, consultation, professional development and the development of Schema Therapy programs and initiatives.

Nicole's role will contribute to the ongoing development of Schema Therapy services at Willow Tree, including exploring new ways Schema Therapy can be offered to clients over time.

Our aim is to build a strong and collaborative Schema Therapy community within Willow Tree, bringing together clinicians who share an interest in deeper, relational and evidence-based therapeutic work.

Schema Therapy Supervision
Nicole is an experienced clinical supervisor and provides specialist Schema Therapy supervision and consultation to psychologists and other appropriately qualified clinicians, including clinicians external to Willow Tree Psychology & Wellbeing.

You do not need to work at Willow Tree to access supervision with Nicole.

While Nicole's individual therapy practice at Willow Tree is with adults, her professional experience spans acute mental health, child and adolescent mental health, correctional, community, university and private practice settings. Her supervision can therefore support clinicians working across different client groups, depending on their supervision needs and Nicole's scope of practice.

Nicole provides supervision for clinicians who are:
•    Beginning to incorporate Schema Therapy into their clinical work
•    Wanting to develop greater confidence and depth in Schema Therapy
•    Seeking support with Schema case conceptualisation and treatment planning
•    Developing their use of Schema Therapy techniques and interventions
•    Working with complex or challenging clinical material
•    Seeking specialist Schema Therapy consultation
•    Undertaking Schema Therapy training
•    Working towards Schema Therapy accreditation

Nicole's supervision aims to provide a thoughtful and collaborative space where clinicians can deepen their understanding of Schema Therapy, reflect on their clinical work and continue developing their confidence and competence.

External Schema Therapy supervision is available in person at Willow Tree Psychology & Wellbeing in Adelaide and via Telehealth Australia-wide, subject to availability and suitability.

Training, Research & Professional Contribution
Nicole is actively involved in the broader Schema Therapy professional community. She co-facilitates Schema Therapy training through SchemXcollective and co-facilitates the Gender and Sexuality Schema Therapy ISST Special Interest Group.

Her clinical, supervisory, training and research interests come together around a shared question: how can psychological therapy understand people not only in terms of their individual experiences and patterns, but also within the relationships, communities and systems that have shaped their lives.

Nicole's ongoing research explores the integration of queer, decolonial and feminist theory into clinical practice, contributing to the continued development of a socially responsive approach to Schema Therapy.

Appointments
Individual appointments are available in person at Willow Tree Psychology and Wellbeing in Felixstow, Adelaide, with Telehealth available Australia-wide where clinically appropriate.

Schema Therapy supervision is available to Willow Tree clinicians and external clinicians, with in-person and Telehealth supervision options subject to availability.
