Accredited Mental Health Socials Workers

Social workers have a focus on psychological, social, and cultural needs, providing support across different and diverse contexts for both individuals and families. To become a social worker, completion of a 4-year undergraduate degree is required. This degree covers counselling interventions and human development. After completion of their undergraduate, they can choose to complete further training. This additional training gives them clinical status and the title 'Accredited Mental Health Social Worker’. Those with the title 'Accredited Mental Health Social Worker’ have undertaken 2 years of supervised practice in the mental health field in delivering evidence-based therapies.

Accredited Mental Health Social workers are required to register with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), and are required to complete annual professional development/training to maintain their registration. This registration process is similar to Registered Psychologists, who are also required to complete annual development/training to maintain registration. They are able to provide evidence-based counselling interventions like a psychologist but are unable to provide mental health diagnoses or psychological testing like a psychologist. Mental Health Social Worker services are eligible under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Scheme, meaning Medicare rebates are eligible for clients of Social Workers.
